ANCIENT SYMBOLSSource: Ancient Symbols Ancient Symbols and their meanings Welcome to Ancient-Symbols.com. We love the beauty, the meanings, and significations of many of the world’s most ancient symbols. As you can see on our menus, we have a wide range of symbols by subjects. Each page will give you the pictures of the symbols and their meanings. |
Eye of God SymbolThe Eye of God is a symbol that is representative of divine watchfulness, of the Supreme Being taking care of the entire universe. It is shown as a single human eye enclosed in a triangle and often surrounded by clouds or burst of light. Also known as the ‘All-Seeing Eye‘ and ‘Eye of Providence‘, the symbol has been used since the ancient times to signify the omniscience and omnipresence of God and His power, preserving and guarding character. Throughout history, eye iconography has been used in different cultures and religions. The Hebrew literature talks of the watchful eyes of the Lord looking over all creation. The Egyptians have the Eye of Horus that symbolizes protection, good health, and royal power. In Hinduism, there are references to Lord Shiva’s ‘third eye’ and in Buddhism, the Buddha is known as ‘Eye of the world’. In Christianity, the triangle enclosing the eye is symbolic of the Holy Trinity, while the clouds of rays of light around it represent divinity and spiritual illumination. The Eye of God symbol has a significant Masonic connection too. It appeared as a part of Freemasonry iconography in 1797. The Freemasons view God as the Great Architect of the Universe and the symbol of His vigilant eye serves as a reminder to all Masons that He is always watching their thoughts and actions. The symbol has been used on the currency of some countries such as the U.S. one dollar bill, Ukrainian 500 hryvnia note and Estonian 50 krooni bill. It also appears on several official seals and coats of arms, including the Coat of Arms of Belarus, the University of Mississippi seal, the University of Chile seal, etc. The Eye of God has even been depicted on many buildings, business logos, etc., which reflects the impact the symbol has had on the common man’s consciousness. |
Hecate Wheel ~ Symbol of rebirth and renewal. The Hecate wheel is a symbol of Hecate who is an ancient Greek goddess who rules over the earth, sea, and sky. She is a protective goddess who bestows prosperity and daily blessings to families. One of the earliest monuments to Hecate is found in Athens. It is terracotta written in the 6th century. Later, in the 5th century, Hecate was depicted in triplicate. Dogs and crossroads are associated with Hecate. The Hecate wheel is a circle within which is a circular labyrinth surrounding a spiral. The labyrinth is a symbol of rebirth. The central spiral is a symbol of divine thought. |
Dragon SymbolThe Dragon is a mythical creature featuring in the folklore and mythologies of almost all major cultures worldwide. Different cultural traditions have portrayed it with reptilian or serpentine traits so that it may seem to resemble cobras, crocodiles or lizards. The word ‘dragon’ traces its origin in the Greek word ‘Drakon’ that means a huge serpent or a giant sea fish. Primarily, there are two types of dragons – the European and the Chinese. Under Christianity, the European dragons were generally portrayed as malevolent and fearful beings, while pre- Christian dragons were mostly depicted as benevolent. The creatures have a very strong presence in several European mythologies, including the Greek, Germanic, Italian, Slavic, and Celtic. The Chinese culture has a very unique association with dragons and their animal hierarchy has the dragon right at the top. Considered to be symbols of imperial authority, dragons have been revered by the Chinese since antiquity and associated with power, strength, and glory. The legendary beings are also associated with water and water-related weather occurrences. They are believed to control rainfall, floods, hurricanes and water bodies. Many other Asian cultures also, including Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean, associate dragons with water and believed to bring clouds and rainfall. Most of the Asian dragons are considered representative of the emperor and symbolic of supremacy, prosperity, life, longevity, fertility, regeneration and growth. The Indian folklore has dragons in form of Nagas, serpents that have the power to take human form. They have been regarded as the protectors of rivers, springs and wells, and also guardians of treasure. The modern depictions of dragons show them as forces of either good or evil, depending on their species. The creatures continue to capture the imagination of people as dragon motifs and dragons keep making appearances in the modern works of art, literature, and games. |
Hands of Svarog/Hands of God Symbol of HeavenSvarog was the Supreme and Heavenly god in both eastern and western Slavic religions. He was also the god of blacksmithing and he formed all of the other gods from his sparks. He was the guardian of the sacred fire. Svarog created the world with his hands, not with magic. This symbol was found on a casket made by the Przeworsk culture from Poland. The symbol represents Heaven and the all powerful Svarog. The interior swastika symbols represent the sun, which gives live to those on earth. Today the Hands of Svarog is a symbol used by Polish Rodnovers. |
LabyrinthThere have been hundreds of stories, fables, and tales—such as the tale of the minotaur—about labyrinths through the centuries. But the first signs of this complicated, circular maze were found in Minoan palaces, usually accompanying female goddesses. The word ‘labyrinth’ is said to come from the ancient pre-Greek word ‘labrys,’ which means ‘double-edged ax.’ This was considered a symbol of royal power during those times. History also shows that labyrinths were used to trap bad or evil spirits or as a path used in rituals or dances. It was also used as a symbol of the long and difficult path one must take to commune with God (from the one entrance signifying birth and the center signifying God). In modern times, many people still use labyrinths in meditation. They walk around the circles to achieve a contemplative state as part of their path to enlightenment. The Labyrinth is also perceived as a sign of wholeness, achieved through the circular and meandering journey around it. Some people see it as the journey one must take within himself to discover his own center or the deep knowledge encoded within him and his DNA. This circular maze also reveals patterns of sacred geometry, which allows the physical world to interconnect with the cosmic order and higher realms of being. |
Triple Moon SymbolThe Triple Moon Symbol is a popular pagan and Wiccan symbol used to represent the Goddess. It shows different portions of the lunar cycle, with the moon in three phases – waxing, full and waning. First, there is a crescent moon that is in a growing/waxing phase. In the center comes a circle representing the full moon, and finally, there is a crescent denoting the diminishing/waning moon. Spiritual and religious symbols contain meanings that delve into the deeper reality. The same goes for the Triple Moon Symbol, which is considered representative of all aspects of the divine feminine power – intuition or psychic insight; creative energy; and wisdom & mystery. It indicates the three life stages of a woman. The waxing moon stands for the Maiden and symbolizes purity, youth, new life, beginnings, rejuvenation, excitement, enchantment, and expansion. The full moon represents the Mother and represents fulfillment, fertility, ripeness, potency, compassion, giving, caring, nurturing, protection and power. The waxing moon represents the Crone and stands for repose, maturity, wisdom, experience, knowledge, understanding, completion, death and rebirth. In its entirety, the symbol is believed to signify the eternal cycle of birth, life, and rebirth. Also called the Triple Goddess symbol, the Triple Moon icon is commonly seen on the crowns or headpieces worn by the High Priestesses. |
Hunab KuThe Hunab Ku is an ancient Mayan symbol that is said to represent the Supreme God or the One Being, with ‘Hunab’ meaning ‘one state of being’ and ‘Ku’ meaning ‘God.’ It encompasses all opposites in the universe and unites them as one: male and female, dark and light, yin, and yang, conscious and unconscious, internal and external—the list goes on. Some believe that the Hunab Ku acts as a bridge to connect these opposites. The Hunab Ku symbol is a testament to the belief that it can unite the opposing forces. It can be likened to the yin-yang symbol, with black spirals on one side, and white spirals on the other. Much ado has been made out of it; especially because of the Mayan prophesy about the year 2012, when the sun will align with Hunab Ku (the galactic center of the universe or the black hole discovered by scientists). Despite predictions about the future, the symbol is still considered a powerful one. It can be used to achieve balance and harmony in life because of its intrinsic powers of uniting or bridging opposites. It can also be used to connect one’s inner being with one’s external body or to achieve oneness with the universe. |
