We receive many emails asking us.....how do I become an active
citizen. One suggestion is to check out Avaaz. Even if you don't want to
participate, it is a wonderful resource to keep abreast of global issues and
"hot topics".
Avaaz is a campaigning community that brings people-powered
politics to decision-making worldwide. They have over 24 million members
worldwide and they are collectively making a difference.
Avaaz is only five years old, but has exploded to become the
globe's largest and most powerful online activist network.
Avaaz—meaning "voice" in several European, Middle Eastern and
Asian languages—launched in 2007 with a simple democratic mission:
organize citizens of all nations to close the gap between the world we
have and the world most people everywhere want.
Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take
action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and
poverty to conflict and climate change. Their model of internet organizing
allows thousands of individual efforts, however small, to be rapidly combined

Delivering our 1.6 million voices to Brazil's Senate
|
Brazil says NO to Corruption, YES to 21st Century Democracy!
Brazilians are saying enough is enough to rampant corruption.
First it was the hugely successful Clean Record Law campaign, to bar politicians
convicted of crimes from running for office -- which studies have shown
Avaaz played a key role in winning. Now an
Avaaz member has created the biggest online petition in Brazilian history --
with over 1.6 million voices demanding that Senators kick out the Senate
President, a disgraced politician under a cloud of corruption allegations. He’s
still there for now, but we’re close to ending the secret voting process which
allowed him to get the Senate top spot.
Even better, the Senate just voted to make it easier and faster
for citizens to force politicians to take action. Avaaz was repeatedly cited
during the Senate debate, in which they agreed to halve how many people need to
sign popular initiative petitions, and they determined that online signatures
can count! Now we’re going all out to get the lower house on board.

Saving Europe's Bees
April 2013
After more than two years of tireless campaigning, Europe
finally banned bee-killing pesticides!! Mega-corporations like Bayer threw
everything they had at this, but people-power, science and good governance came
out on top!!
Bees pollinate two thirds of all our food -- so when scientists
noticed that slowly, silently, they were dying at a terrifying rate, Avaaz swung
in to action, and we kept on swinging until we won. This victory is the result
of two years of flooding ministers with messages, a mind-blowing petition with
over 2.6 million signatures, organizing media-grabbing protests with beekeepers,
funding opinion polls and much, much more.
It’s been a long haul to get this win, and it wouldn't have been
possible without scientists, specialists, sympathetic officials, beekeepers and
our campaign partners. But we can be proud of what we've helped to accomplish
together.

Guilt-free clothing
Hundreds of Bangladeshi women have been burned or crushed to death while
making our clothes! Fashion companies could sign an agreement that will
either be a strong safety code or a weak PR ploy. If we get the CEOs of H&M
and GAP to back a life-saving code, others will follow. Take action here
Update: Huuuuuge victory! H&M signed the Bangladesh safety agreement and
our campaign is all over the media, but GAP is refusing to sign up. Let's make
sure the CEO knows customers across the world demand our clothes are made in
safe conditions. Avaaz will follow-up with ads and other actions to shame the
CEO in his hometown. Sign and share the campaign
now!

Fulfilling Malala's Dream
October 2012
When 15-year old Malala Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban, the world was
outraged. In response, nearly 1 million of us called on the Pakistani government
to fulfill her dream of education for all by supporting a national stipend
programme to put all of Pakistan’s poor children in school. The UN Education
Envoy Gordon Brown delivered our petition directly to Pakistani President
Zardari, who signed it himself! On that very day, a month after Malala was shot,
the Pakistani government officially launched a stipend programme for 3 million
children.
