Everything Is An Expression Of Love

Source: Jafree Ozwald

th-130501768

All negative thoughts and feelings are simply love under pressure. Every action you take and every word you speak is an expression of love.

Anger, sadness, greed and guilt are just contracted forms of energy that originally came from love, yet were contorted by the mind.

If you look closely, you’ll find that everything in this Universe comes from love. This may be a radical idea to digest and religiously implement in your personal belief system, yet I invite you to try on these new prescription “love glasses” for a week or two. The slightest change in ones perspective can dramatically shift everything!

“He that sees the Self sees the Divine. All that you see depends on the seer. Apart from the seer there is no seen.” -Sri Ramana Maharshi

Just imagine that from this day forth, every word you hear from another person is felt first by your new love filter. Whenever someone speaks to you with judgment, criticism, resentment or disgust, you only hear the innocent love that is trying to get through beneath their words.

Everyone has a higher Self, which is always present (somewhere beneath the surface) and is always trying to communicate through to you. Once you have the awareness to truly listen from this higher essence you won’t hear “negativity” anymore. You’ll just hear the love.

You see, love is always in there, somewhere. If you dive deep enough through a person’s words, to the root of their energy, you’ll find that at the very core is an infinite Source of love. Just as all the colors of the rainbow stem from pure sunlight, the variety of thoughts, feelings and experiences you have radiate directly from love.

“Health is the greatest gift. Happiness is the greatest wealth. Enlightenment is the greatest bliss.” ~Buddha

Life is a radical and amazing experience when all that you see, hear and feel from people is the essence of love. Each moment is an invitation to experience The Divine in others around you and within yourself. People who are trapped in only expressing a contracted state of personality are simply uneducated. They just don’t know how to dive deeper inside to find their loving center and express from this space in a relaxed and authentic way. The love is already in their heart, yet it’s being expressed through the “complaint filter” their mother, father or grandfather handed down to them.

Drop the filter and you’ll find love. Look past people’s falseness, beyond their games, facades, personalities, and peer deeper inside them, focusing on the Source where love is springing forth. You’ll always find love at the innermost core. The miracle is that by seeing it, you automatically ignite their awareness to seeing it too! This chain reaction awakens the world so people can dismantle their walls, fears, illusions and resistance to love, and discover that the Source of love is always inside themselves and within you!

“You were born with potential. You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness. You were born with wings. You are not meant for crawling, so don’t! You have wings, learn to use them and fly!” -Rumi

To live as the source of love each day, it’s essential that you practice compassion for where people are at in their spiritual path. This is the only way we can live in a truly harmonious world. Simply recognize that we have come from one Source, which is love, and we are each on a specific journey to fully realize this Source. There is no other journey we are on. Everything is for our awakening process. The loving Source is who you already are.

Whenever you believe that we just live in the world of duality, of opposing forces such as hot and cold, night and day, male and female, black and white etc….look a little deeper. Gaze towards the Source where these ideas and experiences are coming from. If your mind goes blank, great! Keep diving, you’ll soon discover the multi-dimensionality found in every breathing moment of life stems from one perpetual effortless loving Source.

The True and Mysterious Meaning of the Hamsa Hand

Source: Dani Rhys

hamsa-hand

If you take a trip to the Middle East or North Africa, chances are you’ll spot a lot of people wearing the Hand of Fatima, also known as Hamsa. You may even hear people mutter “Hamsa, Hamsa, Hamsa, tfu, tfu, tfu”, similar to the English phrase touch wood.

But where does the Hamsa Hand come from and what is its original meaning? Let’s begin by looking at the design of the Hamsa, what it represents and how it’s used in the modern era.

What is the Hamsa Hand?

The symbol is known by many names, including:

Hamsa – a transliteration of the Arabic “Jamsa” or “Khamsah” meaning five
Hand of God – A general name
Hand of Fatima – After Fatima, the daughter of the Islamic prophet
Hand of Miriam – After Miriam, the sister of Aaron and Moses of Jewish faith
Hand of Mother Mary – After Mary, the mother of Jesus in Christian beliefs

Hamesh – Meaning 5 in Hebrew
It’s also known by the variations Humes Hand, Khamesh and Khamsa
The Hamsa symbol is often depicted as a symmetrical hand, with fingers pressed close together, either facing upwards or downwards. Sometimes, it features an eye at the center of the palm, which is the nazar boncugu, believed to repel the evil eye.

The Hamsa Hand is one of the oldest symbols in history, dating back several thousands of years. It’s believed to pre-date all major religions, many of which later adapted the symbol to represent some aspect of the religion.

Scholars believe that the Hamsa originated in Mesopotamia and Carthage, where it was used as an amulet to repel the evil eye, a concept that’s existed in a wide range of cultures. From there, it spread geographically to become a globally recognized image. Generally, it acts as a good luck charm.

What Does the Hamsa Hand Symbolize?

In general, the Hamsa hand is a symbol of protection, warding off evil and keeping the user safe. The way you wear the symbol also carries meaning.

A Hamsa facing downwards symbolizes abundance and prosperity, inviting good things to come into your life. An upside-down Hamsa also is seen as a blessing for fertility as well as a means of receiving answered prayers. Generally, the fingers are close together when facing down.

A Hamsa facing upwards acts as a talisman against evil and any malicious intent.

Additionally, it acts as a shield against any negative thoughts and feelings you may have about yourself and others, including feelings such as greed, jealousy and hatred. The fingers are sometimes spread apart symbolizing the warding off of evil

However, like any other symbol, it should be no surprise that the Hand of Fatima has acquired new meanings as it was integrated into different religions and beliefs. The Hamsa is that rare symbol that makes an appearance in all the world’s major religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Each of these religions adopted the Hamsa and gave it their own interpretation. Additionally, outside of religious circles, the Hand of Fatima has gained a more general understanding.

Hamsa in Christianity:

Within the Catholic denomination, there is a loose linking of the Hamsa Hand with the Virgin Mary, who represents strength, compassion and the feminine. It also reflects the concept of Mary exalted above all else and as a benevolent mother towards all. In the wider Christian community, the eye in the center is replaced with the Christian symbol of the fish, the vesica piscis. It is a symbol of protection against those who wish to do you harm.

Hamsa in Hinduism and Buddhism: In these faiths, the Hamsa is often taken to represent the chakras (which are the energy centers that run along the spine), the energy that flows between these centers and the specific hand gestures on forms while meditating or practising yoga so as to redirect energy. Each of the five fingers has an energy, and the five particular mudras associated with the Hamsa are:
Thumb: The solar plexus chakra and fire element
Forefinger: The heart chakra and air
Middle finger: The throat chakra and ethereal elements
Ring finger: The root chakra and earth element
Pinkie finger: The sacral chakra and water.

Hamsa Hand in Judaism: In Judaism, the Hamsa’s value comes from its connection to the number 5, which has holy associations in the faith. Five is the number of holy books in the Torah, it’s one of God’s names and it also reminds the wearer to use their five senses to praise God.
Hamsa in Islam: Within the Muslim community, the Hamsa Hand takes on the same meaning as that found in other cultures in the Middle East. That is, the Hand of Fatima is an amulet to ward off the evil eye and protect the wearer from curses.

However, the five fingers of the Hand of Fatima can also represent the five pillars of Islam:
* Faith and the belief that there is only one God and one Prophet
* Prayer which is obligatory
* Alms which is compulsory giving to help others
* Fasting during the month of Ramada to enhance one’s spirituality and connection to God
* Pilgrimage to Mecca

A Generalised Interpretation: Because of the Hamsa’s connection with numerous religions, it can be seen as a symbol of unity. Its connection to female figures emphasizes it as a symbol of femininity and compassion. And finally, because the Hamsa had been around before the major religions, it can be considered a pagan or spiritual symbol as well. It’s also a representation of the unity between male and female energies, which come together to bring harmony, balance and enlightenment.

Is It Culturally Inappropriate to Wear the Hamsa Hand?

If you’re worried that wearing the Hamsa Hand is cultural appropriation, it’s important to note that the symbol can’t be claimed by any single culture or religious group. While the symbol does carry religious connotations, it’s also a general protection symbol.

All things considered, the Hamsa offers many symbolic interpretations, and it would be unfair and wrong for any group to lay claim to it. However, it’s a good idea to understand the symbolism behind the image if you decide to have it inked on your body or featured in your jewelry, as a sign of respect.

Hamsa Hand FAQs

How is the Hamsa Hand different from the evil eye?

Although the Hamsa hand features an eye (usually blue) on its palm, it is distinct from the evil eye. The Hamsa hand and the Evil eye are both major symbols that existed in different religions in ancient times and often protect the wearer.

However, while the evil eye performs the sole function of repealing the evil eyes of others; the Hansa hands radiate positivity and bring forth fortune while also warding off bad energy.

Where did the Hamsa hand originate from?

An Israelite tomb with an inscription like the Hamsa Hand was found as far back as the 8th century. Hence, its origin can be traced to ancient Carthage (now Tunisia) and North Africa. The Hamsa hand has also been found in Mesopotamia (Kuwait and Iraq) and other Western countries.

What does the Hamsa hand symbolize?

The Hamsa Hand is beyond an amulet or jewelry.
Generally, it symbolizes happiness, good health, fortune, good luck, and fruitfulness and has an eye grafted on its palm to repeal negativity and bad wishes.
Religiously, it can mean different things. For instance, it is called the “Hand of Fatima” in Islam and used to refer to the five pillars of Islam, while the Jews believe in it as the ‘Hand of Miriam (sister to Moses and Aaron).”

Is the five fingers a representation of the first books of the Old Testament?

The Hamsa hand derives its meaning from the Arabic word “Hamesh” which means “five”; hence, it has five fingers. In Judaism, these fingers are used to refer to the five books of the Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Can I wear the Hamsa’s hand?

The Hamsa hand is now made into a talisman on jewelry (an amulet) that can be worn on the hand or neck. It is preferable to wear on the neck or hand where it can be seen by you and others.

Is the Hamsa hand also called the hand of Fatima?

Yes. In Islam, it was renamed the “Hand of Fatima” after Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) daughter (Fatima), who exhibited patience, faithfulness, and abundance in her lifetime. Some women who desire to have these qualities wear them as talismans on different jewelry pieces.

Should you wear a Hamsa hand facing up or down?

This is one of the factors you need to consider when shopping for Hamsa hand jewelry. When the palm faces upward, it shows that it is against evil. That is, it wards off bad intentions or wishes. On the other hand, when it faces down, it is usually fused, and it attracts good luck, abundance, kindness, fertility, and friendship. Either way, it spells goodness.

Can I wear the Hamsa hand as a Christian?

This would depend on your faith. While some Christians regard the Hamsa as the hand of Holy Mother Mary and believe in its ability to invoke her (Mother Mary’s) protection, some Christians frown at the Hamsa because it is being used by other religions.

Which materials can be used to make Hamsa hand jewelry?

The Hamsa amulet is versatile and can be made from glass beads, wood, and metals. Since it’s worn as a talisman on necklaces and bracelets, it can be made of anything possible to fit in.

Is the Hamsa hand jewelry fortified?

Not all Hamsas are fortified. Some people wear it as an expression of their spirituality while others put it on with belief in its idea or only as a jewelry piece.

Why does the Hamsa hand have an eye?

Some Hamsas do not have an eye. However, for Hamsas that do, the eye is present to protect the wearer from the evil eye of others. Therefore, it should also not be mistaken as the evil eye.

Is the Hamsa hand a myth?

The Hamsa hand has grown popular in the Western world. It can be seen worn by celebrities or hung on the wall as art. It is not a myth but a symbol across many religions and cultures.

Wrapping Up

Overall, the Hamsa Hand continues to be a universally used and well-regarded symbol. It’s multi-layered and complex in its many meanings, but at its heart, the Hamsa symbol represents protection from evil. Even today, many choose to keep the Hamsa Hand close as a symbol of protection and good luck.
